Physical Education & Athletics
Physical activity is an essential part of the Stevens school day. The two-year-olds, three-year-olds, PreK and Kindergarten classes participate in daily recess, and music classes incorporate movement for physical health and wellness. The physical education program begins in 1st grade with games and activities that develop gross motor skills, encourage teamwork and promote personal, social and physical wellbeing.
Students progress to new sports by 3rd and 4th grade, including soccer, baseball, scooter hockey and basketball. In addition to building stamina and encouraging lifelong fitness, the program stresses sportsmanship, team building and the accomplishment of common goals. By middle school, physical education classes incorporate more competitive sports play and students increase their awareness and responsibility for their physical well being. In every grade of the program, physical education teachers also implement the school’s health and wellness curriculum.
Beginning in 3rd and 4th grade, team play is extended through Spartans Athletics. Stevens currently offers both competitive and intramural sports, including cross country and flag football in the Fall, eight teams of basketball in the Winter, and track, soccer and kickball in the Spring.
In May, each campus hosts Fun & Fitness Day, a day filled with a variety of physical games and sports for 3rd-8th grades. This is a highlight of the school year! Events, including obstacle courses, relay races, soccer and more, are coordinated by faculty and parent volunteers.
