Is My Child Ready for Camp?

We want every camper to have a safe, positive, and engaging experience, and to feel successful, confident, and supported throughout their time with us. Our summer programs are active, collaborative, and designed to foster growing independence. Because every child arrives with their own personality, strengths, and comfort levels, it’s completely normal for readiness to vary. The guide below outlines key indicators that can help you determine whether our camp environment is the right fit for your child at this time.

Independence & Personal Responsibility

  • Can your child manage age-appropriate self-care (e.g., using the restroom, washing hands, dressing, managing personal hygiene)?
  • Are they able to keep track of their belongings, care for their own water bottle, and gather their items independently?
  • For younger campers: Are they fully potty trained?
  • For older campers: Do they demonstrate responsibility and follow through with expectations independently?

Following Instructions & Staying with the Group

  • Can your child follow directions from adults in a structured environment?
  • Are they able to remain with their group, move between activities, and handle transitions throughout the day?
  • Do they understand and abide by basic safety rules?

Communication & Asking for Help

  • Is your child able to express their needs, feelings, or concerns to an adult?
  • Can they let a teacher know if they need a break, feel unwell, or need help in a social situation?

Social Readiness & Group Interaction

  • Has your child participated successfully in another out-of-home program (school, daycare, after-school activities, clubs, sports, etc.)?
  • How does your child manage themselves in group settings?
    • For younger campers: Are they comfortable interacting with peers and warming up to new people?
    • For older campers: Can they collaborate, share space, and navigate typical peer dynamics with age-appropriate maturity?

Emotional Regulation & Coping Skills

  • How does your child handle frustration, conflict, or being away from home for the day?
  • When they feel upset, can they use coping strategies with the support of an adult?
  • Are they able to adapt to new settings, routines, and experiences?

Stamina & Engagement

  • Can your child participate in a full, active day that includes outdoor time, hands-on activities, and scheduled transitions?
  • Do they have the energy, focus, and enthusiasm to stay engaged across a variety of camp experiences?

Interest & Motivation

  • Is your child excited or at least curious about joining camp, meeting new people, and trying new activities?
  • Do they show readiness to be part of a community experience?

Support Needs

While we strive to make camp welcoming and accessible, we may not be equipped to provide certain levels of medical, behavioral or social support. If your child typically receives 1:1 support at school or in other programs, or if you have concerns about whether camp is the right fit, please reach out before registering so we can discuss your child’s needs and explore together whether Summer Camp at Stevens Cooperative can support them.

Our goal is to partner with families to ensure that each camper is set up for success. If you have questions about your child’s readiness or their individual needs, please contact us—we’re happy to help you make the best decision for your family.
