First Grade
Curriculum Overview
First grade is an exciting year as students use the foundational skills learned in Kindergarten to continue to build and practice independence. With Columbia University’s Teachers College Reading and Writing Project as the backbone to our literacy curriculum, first graders grow as readers and writers by developing comprehension strategies to understand books and craft moves to bring their stories to life. Using a whole child approach, students participate in community building activities to support their social and emotional growth. In first grade, additional specials classes are added to expand their studies, including Technology and Physical Education.
