PreK 4 Curriculum Overview
 

Literacy occurs across the PreK 4 curriculum in many different areas.  The development of oral language is the critical foundation for early reading and writing skills. Literacy development, therefore, encompasses the early development of letter and sound recognition, storytelling and story theater, fingerplays and chants, rhymes, emergent sound spelling and writing, and handwriting.
 

Math occurs throughout the day and across the curriculum. It is balanced with hands-on activities, group and individual work, and concept building activities. Children explore reasons why people count and ways to strategize how to count, keep track of quantities, represent given values and recognize numerals.
 

PreK 4 students become detectives and scientists eager to observe the world around them, ask questions, collect information, hunt for clues, and practice other scientific skills, such as making connections and recording their findings in pictures, words and graphs. 
 

The goal of our multifaceted social studies curriculum is allowing children to build and express their understanding of the world around them, as well as their place in their various communities.
 

Building on PreK3, students continue to build their sense of self and appreciation for others in their classroom communities and beyond through the Family Quilt study, an exploration of the different homes in which our community members live. Students also take on classroom jobs and sign collaborative classroom conduct agreements.

Students develop skills including:

• How to be  kind and caring community members 
• Identify and name feelings
• Problem solving skills
• Self-help skills
• Self regulation practices 

In our youngest classrooms, student progress is assessed through close observation and recording, conferencing with children individually, and creating opportunities that allow children to demonstrate and apply knowledge, skills or abilities.
