Plenary Session: In Our Classrooms, In Our Schools: What is the Story of Learning in This Place?
Mark Church Researcher, Worldwide Cultures of Thinking Project and Project Zero Online Course Instructor
Creating an environment where student thinking is visible and valued goes beyond implementing prescribed techniques. It requires a deliberate stance—choosing to reflect on learning rather than react to pressure, and making choices by intention rather than by default. Every educator faces a constant stream of instructional choices: when to step in, when to step
back, and when to let an idea linger. While strong curriculum is essential, it is the intention behind these moment-to-moment decisions that ultimately shapes a classroom's culture. And this, in turn, sends messages to learners about both what and how powerful learning happens. In this plenary, we will explore the critical forces that build a rich story of learning and create a
culture of thinking in service of deeper understanding.
