Stevens philosophy emphasizes hands-on learning geared to each child’s developmental readiness. Our approach to Physical Education also encompasses this philosophy. The purpose of Physical Education is to help all students develop small and large motor skills in an age appropriate manner, to increase self confidence and to ensure that the pursuit of fitness is fun.

A wide variety of activities and games provide students the perfect opportunity to understand and value each other’s strengths and weaknesses, especially when the focus is on fun and variety rather than winning and losing. Stevens ensures all students feel successful by creating an environment that helps develop collaborative skills as well as encouraging students to meet personal challenges. All students in 2nd – 8th grades, have time with the Physical Education teacher both inside a gym and outside. The program includes instruction on the structure of the human body, how to take care of it and aspects of nutrition that affect stamina and overall fitness. Activities include many cooperative games, obstacle courses, jogging, running and ball-handling and team skills in basketball , volleyball and soccer. Swimming is also included for the middle school in at least two trimesters a year. Stevens Cooperative School fields two to four basketball teams each year in the local non-public schools league – they are co-ed teams and all who want to participate are encouraged to do so.
