On the Basketball Court

Posted February 25, 2010

Basketball season is well underway and Stevens’ teams continue to play with increasing levels of skill and lots of spirit. Playing in a league comprised of Hoboken independent, parochial and charter schools such as Hoboken Catholic, Mustard Seed, Hudson and Elysian Charter, our students have shown that they are able competitors. The addition of girl’s league this year has given Stevens’ middle school girls a “league of their own” and a chance to play with and against female students in 6th, 7th and 8th grades.

Our 5th grade team (Stevens White) is having a great year learning and adjusting to the game as it played at this level. Playing against mostly older students and at 10 ft baskets is challenging but they are gaining valuable experience and playing time that will serve them well next year.

Our 6th grade team (Stevens Red), has built upon its experience last year, and is one of the top teams in the league. The 7th and 8th grade team, Stevens Varsity, is having a challenging year. Comprised mostly of 7th graders and coed many schools at this level are fielding teams of primarily older boys. But we’re confident that next year’s team of 7th and 8th graders will be one of the teams to beat.

Our girls’ team, with good representation from the 6th, 7th and 8th grades have played several exciting games so far this season, and is coming together as a cohesive group. They are proving to be a very formidable team in the league. Most of these girls are already playing for one of our other teams.

A schedule of games is on the website and we invite parents and students to come out and cheer on our fine athletes. We'll update you next month at playoff time.
