"Parents do not give up
their children to strangers lightly. They wait in uncertain anticipation
for an expression of awareness and interest in their children that is
as genuine as their own." Dorothy Cohen, The Learning Child
Stevens' philosophy emphasizes hands-on learning geared
to each child's developmental readiness. A glance around any of our classrooms
or at the daily schedules on the blackboards is evidence of all the things
Stevens faculty consider and prepare. Here, teachers are required to be
adaptable, flexible and creative since they must always be responsive
to different learning styles. They are dedicated to supporting and challenging
each child as an individual as well as a member of a group. From Nursery
to 5th grade there are two teachers in each classroom; most Head teachers
have Master's degrees (many from Bank Street College of Education) and
most Assistant teachers are enrolled in Master's programs. Faculty collaborate
closely with each other, with the Head of School, with the learning specialist
and with the specialists in Art, Music, Movement, Computer, Math, Spanish,
Latin and Physical Education. In addition, they commit numerous Afterschool,
evening and weekend hours in the preparation and presentation of workshops
and other activities aimed at fostering better parent understanding of
how and what the children are learning.
