Cooperation
among and between adults and children at Stevens Cooperative School
results in a seamless quality in the home/school relationship. Bonds of
community are created naturally in a Cooperative where parents are
working together on committees, painting shelves, planning social
events, helping in the classrooms or assisting young researchers on
trips. Children observing this learn about commitment and cooperation
and the high value their families place on education. Participation in
the classroom gives parents an opportunity to learn about the school's
methods and materials, and provides a rare insight into their children
as learners and group members.
Beginning
in 1949, the Cooperative has evolved from the manager of a nursery
school in which parents were the teachers to a vital part of a 2s-8th
grade elementary school which is staffed by a professional faculty and
Head of School. Parents make the commitment to contribute reasonable
amounts of time, energy and financial resources towards a successful
education for their children. These include a family job, Helping
Parent days, the timely payment of tuition, active participation in
fundraising efforts and attendance at general meetings of the
Cooperative. Everyone benefits from the experience of working together
toward a common goal. A buy-out option is available for parents who do
not wish to participate in these activities.
The School
is managed by a Board of Trustees, comprised almost entirely of current
parents who are elected by the full membership of the Cooperative. The
Cooperative’s membership is comprised of families which have a
child enrolled full-time at the school (4s and older). The Board is
responsible for overseeing fiscal management, for hiring and evaluating
the Head of School and for supporting the School's mission.
