elcome to Stevens Cooperative School, a school for children age two through 8th grade that has since 1949 been a beacon of progressive education in Hudson County. Located on two campuses in Hoboken and Newport, we provide a green house-like atmosphere for children and young adults to grow into multilterate, caring and broadminded learners. We value the role of children as young geographers, entomologists, and anthropologists, and we systematically build on their natural dispositions to understand the world around them.
As a community, we believe that learning is both process and product, measurable and mysterious, predictable and spontaneous. The common variables are desire and diligence. All learning is active. All good teaching is driven by passion.
We are an urban school, and have one of the greatest cities in the world at our fingertips. New York, with all of its cultural and academic riches, is on full display from our Newport campus, and our students make frequent use of what the city has to offer, whether it is spending a day at the Met, an afternoon at the theater, or a morning at the Cloisters. Our students take advantage of other cities as well, traveling to Boston, Philadelphia, Washington DC and Mexico City as part of our curriculum.
This curriculum, rich in the experiential and cultural, comes out of the powers and natural interests of children. Teachers approach mathematical, historical, and scientific thinking on a developmental spectrum and seek to find natural connections and integration across these domains. For that reason, blocks, drama, music and all forms of self-expression are seen as building blocks and portals to intelligence and sensibility.
Believing that all learning is continuous and part of a lifetime portfolio, our school develops comprehensive written narrative reports of each students’ progress. We seek to educate every child from the standpoint of where she/he is. These narratives capture student growth longitudinally so that we have an in-depth profile of children’s development.
Technology, the arts, play, observation, projects, collaborating and negotiating are all a part of the learning experience at Stevens where we take teaching and learning seriously and joyously. Come visit us and see for yourself.
